Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) refers to the gradual breakdown or wear-and-tear of the intervertebral discs in the spine, which act as cushions between the vertebrae. As the discs age, they may lose water content, become thinner, and less flexible, leading to reduced ability to absorb shock. This can result in pain, stiffness, or discomfort, particularly in the neck or lower back. DDD may also cause radiating pain in the arms or legs if a damaged disc presses on nearby nerves. The condition is commonly associated with aging but can also be exacerbated by injury, smoking, or repetitive movements. Physical therapy can help treat this condition.
